Message Discipline

Although regular readers may find it hard to believe that this blog's author has had some training in political communication, nevertheless, it is true.

And one of the little nuggets I have taken away from that training is that the most important message in a political mailer is the one that the recipient reads as she carries the document from the mailbox to the trashcan.

With that in mind, I asked a pal what he thought of this political mailer:

Glancing at it briefly, he declared it one of the worst mailers he had ever observed. Although the mail-to-the-trash message was clear -- that Tammy Duckworth would make a difference if elected -- it was not clear how Tammy Duckworth would make a difference.

Then I pointed out the source:

At which point he declared it the single worst mailer he had ever observed.

I think the Duckworth team owes the NRCC a big "Thank You."

The first impression--Duckworth supports breast cancer research and awareness.

Oh crap...it was supposed to be negative.

It's like they aren't even trying anymore.

Maybe it's because Roskam's staff is really, really sleepy... (note the time). (Not to mention somewhat deluded.)

Roskam himself seems to be completely missing the point to political mailers. Hard to check the work with his eyes closed.

Maybe his new Washington insider will whip the bizarro mailers into shape. Might be too late tho'.

If this is any indication of how he's govern as a Congressman it's pretty pitiful.

Haha, I got this in the mail, too. My first thoughts were that I would find Virginia Slims coupons inside.

I don't know if this one tops the one with the two people sleeping in bed with Caspar the flying ghost hovering over them. You know, the one that looks like it was put out by a pharmaceutical company for a sleep drug.

What the hell kind of direct mail house is this idiot hiring?
